📝 Material Overview, History, and Geology
Saddle Mountain Petrified Wood is a long-standing Washington classic for rockhounds and collectors. Old stock material from this site was once freely traded, but today Saddle Mountain is managed as a public recreational dig area where new finds are limited to personal use only. The pieces offered here come from older collections and are fully legal for commercial lapidary use and resale.
This material formed during the Miocene epoch, around 15 million years ago, when trees were buried in volcanic ash within the Wanapum Basalt Formation. Over time, the organic material was replaced with silica, preserving much of the original structure. The deposit includes both conifers and hardwoods, with many specimens retaining remarkable detail of the wood grain and bark.
Saddle Mountain Petrified Wood is well known for its intricate wood patterns, well-defined bark textures, and a broad range of natural colors. Each piece captures a moment of Earth’s deep past, making it both a collectible fossil and a versatile lapidary material.
📏 Additional Notes
Natural Stone: These are rough stones, 100% natural. Expect natural fractures, inclusions, or pits formed during fossilization - these are part of its character, not flaws.
