Brazilian Rutilated Quartz is a world-famous quartz threaded throughout with golden rutile needles. It often contains hematite as well, and the host quartz ranges from a creamy, milky tone to a pure, clear, ice-like transparency. Sometimes called Angel's Hair Quartz, the needle-like inclusions are titanium oxide, which gives the rutile its signature golden flash. These needles form because the silica building the quartz cannot incorporate the titanium oxide; instead, the two separate, and the titanium oxide becomes trapped as fine needles inside the growing crystal.
