Mexican Velvet Obsidian, also known as Royal Velvet Obsidian and sometimes sold as Royal Peacock, displays a velvety appearance with color flashes in green, gold, and purple that shimmer when moved. It produces impressive cabs and offers an engaging cutting experience for lapidarists. Large quantities were imported in the 1960s and 1970s, but the mine is essentially depleted. Most current material is old stock. This obsidian represents one of Mexico's finest volcanic glass varieties and a classic from collecting's golden era.
