Paiute Agate is a rare old stock lapidary material from eastern Oregon, with most historic material associated with the Steens Mountain and Alvord Desert area in Harney County. Paiute Agate has a high silica content that gives it a distinctive porcelain-like texture when cut and polished, taking a quality finish that lapidary artists value. This material is known for displaying a wide range of looks. Some pieces show rolling-hills picture patterns reminiscent of Biggs Picture Jasper, while others contain blue ice, polka dot-like areas, and black dendrites in opaque to nearly opaque matrix. Paiute Agate sometimes goes by the trade name Paiute Jasper due to its jasper-like opacity in certain pieces, though all the material we have ever worked with has been a true agate.
