This gorgeous large slab of high-grade Mexican Velvet Obsidian displays stunning chatoyant patterns with multiple color flashes across a generous cutting surface. At 188mm x 132mm, this is an exceptionally rare large slab - most Velvet Obsidian found is tumbling and trimmer sized, making pieces this size extremely uncommon. Large enough for many cabochons or a spectacular display piece with vivid color shimmer.

Mexican Velvet Obsidian displays a velvety appearance with color flashes in green, gold, and purple that shimmer when moved. It produces impressive cabs and offers an engaging cutting experience for lapidarists. Large quantities were imported in the 1960s, but the mine is essentially depleted. Most current material is old stock. Also known as Royal Velvet Obsidian, it represents one of Mexico's finest volcanic glass varieties.
