Mexican Velvet Obsidian displays a velvety appearance with color flashes in green, gold, and purple that shimmer when moved. It produces impressive cabs and offers an engaging cutting experience for lapidarists. Large quantities were imported in the 1960s, but the mine is essentially depleted. Most current material is old stock. This obsidian is worth acquiring when found, as availability is limited and demand remains strong. Also known as Royal Velvet Obsidian, it represents one of Mexico's finest volcanic glass varieties and a classic from collecting's golden era.
WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL
The prime color flash and chatoyant shimmer create mesmerizing optical effects. As old stock from a depleted mine, this represents increasingly rare collector-grade material from the 1960s golden era.
