Mexican Rainbow Obsidian, also called Jalisco Obsidian, is a pure form with high flash in bright colors that captivates collectors. Most pieces show a single flash color, though multiple colors occasionally appear. Unlike Velvet Obsidian, the magnetite flows in one direction, creating the characteristic effect. The flash only appears at certain angles under bright light, similar to fire opal's color play. All varieties are visually impressive and make stunning jewelry pieces.
WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL
The velvet-within-rainbow combination is unusual - rainbow obsidian normally shows magnetite flowing in one direction, while velvet has multidirectional chatoyance. Having both characteristics in one piece adds visual complexity rare in either variety alone.
PERFECT FOR
• Cabochon cutting
• Mexican obsidian collectors
• Hybrid flash specimens
