Fire Obsidian rough showing light fire peeking along the top, with deeper fire very probable as you cut into the piece. From Glass Butte, Oregon, this material follows the rule that once you expose the fire line, the entire magnetite flow will generally show fire. This piece should cut nice slabs for cabs either way.

Fire Obsidian features bright fiery flash that can sometimes contain other bright colors creating rainbow effects. It tends to run along a strand and requires considerable practice, patience, and skill to cut slabs and cabs. Fire Obsidian gets its color and flash from magnetite - tiny microscopic metal flecks embedded within the volcanic glass. It is easily one of the most rare obsidian forms known. Since fire obsidian gets its color from magnetite, it requires bright light with the stone at the right angle to display color - under normal conditions, it appears black. Recommended for experienced lapidarists familiar with working challenging materials.
WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL
The visible top fire line already de-risks this cutter - you know where the magnetite flow is. Following the flow should reveal more fire as you slab through.
