Aurora Borealis Obsidian is a variety of rainbow sheen obsidian from Glass Butte, Oregon, named for its striking visual resemblance to the aurora borealis in the night sky. The material comes from a specific pit area at Glass Butte known as the aurora borealis pit. When viewed under direct bright light at certain angles, this volcanic glass displays striking layers of multi-color flash - greens, blues, purples, and pinks shimmering in sheets that move as you tilt the piece. It is considered rare among Glass Butte varieties, especially in pieces with strong multi-color flashes, and takes a quality polish.
WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL
A visible aurora window on a 670-gram cutter is rare - most aurora borealis material is in smaller pieces. The old stock provenance from earlier Glass Butte collecting periods adds collector value.
PERFECT FOR
• Premium cabochon cutting
• Glass Butte collectors
