White Fir Springs Thunderegg Rough – Chocolate Coloration Smoky Complexion – Old Stock Ochoco Specimen
This old stock chocolate White Fir Springs Thunderegg shows the rarer chocolate coloration that really stands out among the creamier typical White Fir material. This type carries an almost smoky complexion and occasionally produces orbicular structures, though this piece does not appear to have them. A neat old stock specimen of a type you don’t see often on the modern legal trade market.

White Fir Springs Thunderegg comes from White Fir Springs in the Ochoco National Forest, approximately 27 miles east of Prineville, Oregon. Unlike most Oregon thundereggs that feature agate cores, White Fir Springs is distinctive for its jasper-filled cores, typically in creamy tan, yellow, beige, pink, reddish, and sunset hues. The iconic white rhyolite skin makes these eggs easy to identify in the field. Less commonly, pieces with chocolate-toned cores turn up, standing out among the creamier typical material with an almost smoky complexion. The original deposit is now a public rockhounding site, with only old stock material legal for commercial trade.
WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL
The chocolate variety of White Fir is far rarer than the creamy tans and sunsets typical of the bed. A legal old stock specimen of a thunderegg that is increasingly hard to find on the trade market.
