🪨 Material Overview, History, and Geology
Saddle Mountain Petrified Wood is a long-standing Washington classic among rockhounds and collectors. Old stock material from this locality was once freely traded, but the site is now managed as a public recreational dig area, where new finds are limited to personal use only. The material offered here comes from older, legally obtained collections and is fully permissible for commercial lapidary use.
Formed during the Miocene epoch (around 15 million years ago), this petrified wood originated within the Wanapum Basalt Formation, where ancient trees were buried in volcanic ash and gradually replaced by silica. The result is a beautifully preserved fossil, often showing distinct wood grain and bark textures across a range of natural earthy hues.
📏 Additional Notes
Natural Stone: This is a cut, unpolished slab of genuine petrified wood. Minor surface pits, fractures, or inclusions are completely natural and part of its ancient formation.
Photos: All photos are taken wet to display color and pattern accurately, with the final photo taken dry for surface inspection.
