Peanut Wood is a rare petrified wood from near Carnarvon, Australia, offering unique paleontological interest. Believed to be Cretaceous driftwood, this material was colonized by shellfish larvae called Teredo (shipworm) that created holes, producing the characteristic white void-filled patterns that resemble peanuts. The material can have natural fractures and requires careful work when cabbing, but results can be exceptional. Limited quantities reach the market due to Australian collection laws that prohibit digging and only allow surface collection, adding to its rarity.
WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL
This piece features abundant Teredo tunnels creating the classic peanut pattern throughout. The well-preserved woodgrain adds geological interest to this rare Australian fossil.
