Description

This is a tumbling sized box.  You could put them directly to the cabbing wheel or slice in half with a trimsaw to cab, but getting slabs would be difficult.

This box has been hand selected to ensure each and every chunk has great velvet pattern somewhere within.  These are all trimmer and small cutter sized!  Velvet Obsidian does require decent light to see the color.  It is much like opal in the sense that you need bright light, and it has to be turned just right to get the flash of brilliance.  Without this, it will just appear like normal black obsidian.  In velvet obsidian, its that gorgeous display that you are searching for.  With this box, what you see is what you get.  Each stone in the photos is included in the medium flatrate box!

Mexican Velvet Obsidian is a higher quality obsidian with loads of magnetite that create the velvet like pattern and flashes within!  It often features many different colors, and it works into some truly amazing cabochons!  Velvet Obsidian is mostly old stock, dug before the 1980s.  It takes an excellent polish and generally cuts fracture free!  It is a personal favorite of mine, and I have never been let down while cutting up batches of these!  They can also make awesome pendants or can be great for wire wrapping projects!

Mexican Velvet Obsidian can also be tumbled with great results!  This tends to remove the skin and let more light in so you can see the color better, and it also takes a mirror grade polish as it is a volcanic glass!  It does take some special care though, but it is 100% possible to get great results!  We recommend doing the start of the polish with a rotary tumbler, and finishing with a vibra-tumbler, but great results are possible with just a rotary tumbler.  If you need any advice, feel welcome to get in touch with us!  If you plan to tumble, just leave a note during checkout with your desired size and we will do our best to pick those.  These can also make great trimmers for cabbing slabs!

Photos are taken with the stones wet.  This helps you see their potential once polished.

Weight: Approx 20 Lbs

I do my best to represent the stones with photos.  I don't enhance photos, though sometimes brightness and contrast on monitors may differ, and while a photo may look just like the rock on my end, it will sometimes appear brighter or duller on your end.  I run my monitor at default brightness and contrast settings.
