Apple Valley Jasper comes from the Sahara Desert and is actually a fossil stromatolite, making it a fascinating specimen for fossil collectors. Stromatolites formed from cyanobacteria colonies trapped in sediment layers and are among Earth's earliest known fossils, dating back billions of years. Each layer represents a geological event, with mineral content determining the colors and patterns visible today. This stromatolite jasper commonly shows bright reds with distinct banding and can feature hematite flowers that create eye-catching cabochons.
WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL
This slab combines flowering hematite stromatolites with oolitic patterning for a visually complex display. It is worth noting that a partially healed hairline fracture runs upward through the center. You will need to work around this area if cabbing, but the slab makes an excellent display piece even unpolished as it is.
PERFECT FOR
• Cabochon cutting (work around center fracture)
• Display specimens
• Fossil and stromatolite collectors
