🌋 Mexican Velvet Obsidian – 💎 Cut Face, Unpolished Rough with Flashing Green ✨
This piece of Mexican Velvet Obsidian features a cut face (unpolished) that reveals beautiful green velvet patterns beneath the surface. Known for its rich magnetite content, Velvet Obsidian displays internal flashes and silky textures that shimmer under the right lighting. The color is light-sensitive—similar to fire opal—requiring bright light and proper angles to reveal its full visual potential.
While the stone may appear mostly black under normal conditions, patient and creative lapidarists can unlock its true beauty through strategic cutting, lighting, and finishing.
Mexican Velvet Obsidian is a higher-grade volcanic glass that generally cuts cleanly and polishes to a brilliant shine. It’s ideal for cabochons, pendants, or wire-wrapping. It can also be successfully tumbled, especially if you remove the outer rind to allow more light to pass through. For best results, we recommend starting in a rotary tumbler and finishing in a vibe tumbler—but even a rotary alone can yield excellent results.

Photo Disclaimer
To best showcase the color, pattern, and potential of each stone, most photos are taken with the material wet to simulate the appearance of a polished finish. The final photo is taken dry to help highlight any natural surface imperfections such as fractures, pits, or voids. Please review all images carefully before purchasing.
I strive to provide accurate, unedited photos that represent each stone as naturally as possible. While I do not use filters or enhancements, please note that colors may appear slightly different depending on your screen’s brightness, contrast, and settings. All photos are taken with my monitor set to default display settings for the most neutral representation.
Natural Stone & Fossil Disclaimer
All of the stones and fossils offered here are natural materials formed over millions of years through geological and organic processes. As a result, it is completely normal for them to exhibit natural fractures, pits, inclusions, voids, and other surface or internal features that reflect their ancient origins.
These characteristics are not flaws—they are part of what makes each piece unique. We encourage you to review all product photos carefully and research the properties of each material before purchasing to ensure it meets your expectations.
